Nominate a Children's Book Illustrator

 Sonia Lynn Sadler Award for Illustration Guidelines
An illustrator who is starting out in the field of children's books (no more than 5 published books). Winning book will demonstrate an illustrator who creates literature that empowers and engages young people through beauty and diversity.

  • $1,000 dollars award prize
  • Hotel accommodations, meals, and transportation within Salisbury, Maryland 
  • Entrance to the Salisbury University Children’s and YA Books Festival, which is held every year in April.

All can nominate--Publisher, agent, writer, illustrator, teacher, student.

INEZ & WELLINGTO SALDER

Inez and Wellington Sadler are Sonia's parents. They live in Bowie, Maryland. Wellington enjoyed a long and prosperous career in the military. Inez, a former art teacher taught Sonia how to use scabbard. Both Inez and Wellington are involved and committed to preserving Sonia's art and legacy.

JEN CULLERTON JOHNSON

Jen is the author of several works, including a non-fiction children’s book Seeds of Change that is an engaging and inspiring invitation into the life and work of Wangari Maathai, Noble Peace Prize Winner and founder of the Greenbelt Movement.  She is the co-founder of GreenLiteracy.org a leader of social change, aligning educational institutions with lifelong ecological stewardship.  Jen is one of the creators of the Karma Garden, the largest collaborative community garden in the United States that serves incarcerated youth. She is an adjunct professor at Wright College, City College of Chicago and a literature teacher at Chicago Public Schools.

DR. PATRICIA DEAN

Dr. Patricia Dean received her Ph.D. from Penn State University in Curriculum and Instruction with emphases on Language and Literacy Education and Early Childhood Education. Prior to her relocation to Salisbury, MD in 2002, Patricia resided in northwestern Pennsylvania where she taught Pre-K, K, 1st & 2nd Grade, and Gifted Education (Grades 1 through 12) for many years.
